Electric or manual??

Manual or electric?

At The Parks Clinics we recommend an electric toothbrush as part of your oral hygiene care. An electric toothbrush can cover more surface of the tooth giving you a better clean and removing more plaque than a manual toothbrush, brushing for two minutes twice a day and flossing will ensure a healthy mouth. At the clinic we offer the Phillips Sonicare 4300 electric toothbrush, we can show you a demo at your appointment to show the best method for brushing your teeth to ensure you’re removing plaque. The toothbrush comes with a charger so you can charge it at home, it also has a light that comes on when it’s about to run out letting you know when you need to re-charge it, the battery normally lasts around 2 weeks.

Using an electric toothbrush

Philips Sonicare’s advanced sonic technology pulses water between your teeth, and its brush strokes break plaque up and sweep it away for an exceptional daily clean. Using the slide and glide effect with your Philips Sonicare toothbrush ensures that you’re being the most effective whilst brushing. The 4300 edition comes with a travel case so when you’re going on a trip you can pack it away with your belongings hygienically.

Why do we recommend an electric toothbrush?

It is clinically proven to remove 7x more plaque than a manual toothbrush; using 1000s more brush strokes per minute than a manual toothbrush. Your hand produces about 300 strokes per brushing minute, compared to 2,000-30,000 strokes with an electric toothbrush!!!!

The Sonicare also has a quad pacer so you know how long to spend on each quadrant on your mouth, this ensures you’re thoroughly cleaning all areas and not missing any. You may not notice when you’re brushing too hard, but the toothbrush will make a pulsing sound as a reminder to ease off on the pressure.

Other advantages:

-the powerful, yet gentle rotation helps loosen plaque, reducing the chances of developing gum disease.

-promotes gum health by cleaning along the gum line, an area that is sometimes missed when using a manual toothbrush.

-more effective around tricky-to-reach around braces, getting around the metal brackets.

-built in timers ensure you brush each section for the right amount of time, so don’t have to think about that 2 minute brushing period, the dentist nags about!

Electric toothbrushes are also popular with kids, because it makes the experience more fun, as they often come in different designs and colours that appeal to youngsters. They also help children get used to the vibration sensations that they may experience at the dentist.

When should I change my toothbrush?

When using an electric toothbrush you don’t have to change the full toothbrush, just the brush part, it comes off as you pull away and that way you can replace the head of your toothbrush without having to buy a new one each time. The Sonicare toothbrush as an example, has BrushSync technology that tracks how long you’ve been using your brush head for, and how hard you’ve been brushing. When it’s time to replace it, a light on your handle and a short beep will let you know; guidelines would say around every 3 months for hygiene.

Speak to one of our clinicians when you’re due in for an appointment and they can show you the toothbrush working, or if you would just like to buy one you can come into the clinic. We have them to purchase in the clinic or we can process an order for you over the phone so you can collect it from the clinic.
