PDO Thread Lift

What is a thread lift?

The PDO thread lift, or non-surgical facelift, is a treatment that is quickly gaining popularity in the world of facial aesthetics and anti-ageing, as an alternative to going under the knife. It is particularly popular for people who want to reduce sagging in the jowl and neck area.

PDO stands for Polydioxanone and is a material that has been used in the medical world for decades. PDO threads are an absorbable suture-like material that is used to lift sagging skin around the face and neck area. Once inserted, the threads can stay in the skin for up to six months, however the lifting effect is long-lasting as the threads encourage the body to produce new collagen which may last up to two years.

How does it work?

The treatment involves the desired number of threads being placed into the skin with the use of a needle and blunt-ended cannula which is removed once the threads are successfully positioned. These threads are then used to reposition the skin and subcutaneous fat pads in the face until the desired amount of lift has been achieved at which point, they are anchored into place, almost like absorbable scaffolding under the skin.

Is it permanent?

The procedure works by lifting the sagging skin and fat pads of the face and encouraging the body to produce more collagen in the area, providing a more youthful appearance lasting up to two years, however it is important to keep in mind that this treatment is not permanent and does not stop the ageing process – only slows it down. Your body will continue to age following the procedure so it’s important to be realistic about the results you can achieve.

Is it painful?

Before the treatment, any make up will be removed and the area will be cleansed. Both a topical and a local anaesthetic will be used on the treatment area to make the procedure more comfortable. The threads are then placed using a cannula which helps to keep swelling and bruising to a minimum. You should only experience a small amount of discomfort during the treatment.

How long does it take?

The treatment takes up to two hours depending on the area being treated.

Is there any downtime?

Most reactions are generally minimal and temporary. You should expect some swelling and you may have some slight bruising following the treatment however these reactions are expected to settle down within a couple of days. Most of our patients have little to no reactions following the treatment.

In the first seven days following the procedure, you may feel a little tender around the sutures; paracetamol can help with this although most patients do not feel this is necessary. You may feel the stitches and the anchoring beneath your skin when you apply your skincare products or make up, although you should not be able to see them.

After having your treatment, you are advised to avoid any rubbing of the area and to avoid any beauty treatments e.g. facial massage, saunas and extreme temperatures for up to 2 weeks. You will be invited to attend a review appointment 2-3 weeks later to assess the results and healing. Fully written aftercare instructions will be given to you after the treatment has taken place.
