Enjoy Summer….healthily!

tooth whitening

We all know when summer comes round, we love to have treats such as cocktails, sweets and ice creams! It is summer after all so we should be allowed to enjoy yourself, right? Of course, but there are some things to be aware of and here at Kingswood Parks Clinics we have some top tips to ensure you can enjoy your summer but keep your oral hygiene on track.

Routine

A brushing is the main focus; having the summer holidays to stay on track with your brushing is great, brushing together as a family ensures you get to spend 6 hours extra over the three-month period. It also ensures you can keep an eye on your children to make sure they’re brushing properly, and not missing any tricky spots!

Make that change; now is the perfect time to make a routine for your oral time, try to make extra time so you can implement small changes to make a big difference.

  • Floss; flossing once a day is key to a healthy mouth something that everyone should do, but not everyone does.
  • Swapping sugary snacks for healthy ones.
  • Ensure you are using a fluoride toothpaste; you can check on the back of packaging to show if it includes this key ingredient.
  • Using an electric toothbrush, rather than a manual brush.

Sugar

We all know when summer comes around, we love to have cocktails and ice lollies in the garden making the most of the sun.

Moderation is key though; if you stick to 5 acid attacks a day it ensures your mouth can sit at a healthy PH level. Maybe try making your own ice lollies, with natural fruits and water? A recipe we have for a lolly would be for fresh orange lollies.

All you’ll need are 3 oranges and 2 peeled pears:

  • grate ¼ tsp of zest from one of the oranges.
  • Roughly chop the rest of the oranges, pop into a blender with the pears and blend until smooth.
  • Pop into lolly moulds and wait until frozen, enjoy!

Being prepared

Summertime means trips out to the park or a short stay-cation. Being prepared on these trips can be a great way to keep healthy. You could make a pack up for the family with healthy but still fun snacks instead of eating out, not only does this save you money but it ensures you know exactly what you’re eating, sticking to fruits instead of sweets are great swaps!

Taking water bottles with you, instead of fizzy drinks are also great and keeps you all hydrated too.

Visiting the dentist

Keeping up with regular dental appointments is essential, you might have a little more time during the school holidays, so arranging appointments now is ideal; the children don’t miss any school and you’ll have extra time to visit. You can also book in hygiene visits with one of our therapists to keep your mouth healthy.
