Air polishing as a cleaning treatment

Air polishing is a great way to efficiently clean the teeth. A combination of water, air and fine powders allow the machine to quickly remove tough extrinsic staining caused by factors such as smoking and regular tea / coffee consumption.

Alongside regular cleaning, air polishing can also improve your oral hygiene. The powerful treatment helps disrupt the sticky bacterial plaque layer which naturally builds up on the teeth. Removal of this plaque prevents the layer from calcifying and leading to more serious oral health problems. Additionally, due to the water component of the compound, the solution can target pockets existing beneath the gum line. This flushes out subgingival bacteria, creating the foundations for both a healthy and stain free smile.

Air polishing as a sensitivity treatment

Due to the range of powders available, air polishing can also be used to combat sensitivity. The treatment contains NovaMin at a concentration of 99%. This is considerably higher than the 6% of NovaMin found within the leading Sensodyne toothpaste. This makes the airflow treatment one of the quickest and most effective ways to treat sensitive teeth, with results lasting up to 6 months.

But what is Novamin?

Novamin is a specialised technology used to repair and protect the dentine of a tooth. Dentine is naturally composed of many microscopic tubules. Exposure of these tubules is often what causes sensitivity. The airflow treatment aims to fill the tubules with NovaMin powder to form a protective barrier. It is this hydroxyapatite-like layer which protects the teeth against sensitivity.
