Microdermabrasion; what is it?

What is Microdermabrasion and why do we need it?

Microdermabrasion is a form of deeply exfoliating the epidermal tissue; which is the surface layer of our skin. This procedure is minimally invasive and aims to resurface the upper layer of the skin, to help the cell renewal process. This treatment is great for de-texturizing the skin and leaves you with a bright, even skin tone. Microdermabrasion can improve the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, acne scarring, melasma, and other skin-related concerns and conditions.

Microdermabrasion is an in-clinic mechanical exfoliation treatment; buffing away the dead skin cells leaves the skin looking more radiant and feeling smoother.

Why is exfoliating your skin important?

Exfoliating the skin is the most efficient way of breaking down the bacteria, free radicals and dirt that builds up on the skin on a daily basis. Collectively, they will sit in the pores and they become clogged if not removed. This is why people get blackheads, as this is simply trapped dirt and bacteria in a pore.

Moreover, the skin sheds naturally around every 30 days. Exfoliating the skin is speeding up the process of getting rid of the old skin cells which are dead keratinised epidermal tissue, to expose new skin with a much more even skin tone.

Dead keratinised skin cells which are laying on the skin waiting for the natural monthly shed, can be a barrier to your skincare routine. Once exfoliated off, the products you use i.e., serums and moisturisers will be able to penetrate deeper into the skin tissue- targeting the skin cells which are new rather than old, dead skin cells.

Microdermabrasion is a fantastic form or exfoliation taking away all dead skin cells and also deep cleanses embedded dirt and bacteria in the pores which cause breakouts. As this treatment is done in the clinic, it is a controlled treatment performed by trained skincare professionals with minimal risk or side effects. It is harsh enough to effectively smooth the texture of the skin and remove the unwanted epidermis, but gentle enough to not cause any downtime or side effects from having the procedure.

Many people try to mimic microdermabrasion at home with rough, beaded exfoliators or cleansers which we highly advise against as these products are too harsh for the skin and can actually damage the skin tissue of the underlying layer. Doing so can cause sensitivity, redness, and inflammation. Once the skin becomes sensitive, the skin barrier has been compromised; this is concerning, and your skin will not be able to retain a healthy water level and will lose moisture really quickly.

So, leave the exfoliation to the skin care professionals and have it done in the clinic, and for best long-term results, have a monthly to 6 weeks repeat treatment.
